Grey Scam Crisis: Scammers Targeting Senior Australians During Downsizing Surge
Thousands of Australian families are now navigating the emotional process of downsizing homes or moving senior loved ones into aged care. However, cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting this vulnerable period through sophisticated online marketplace scams targeting older Australians.
According to property clearance expert and The Property Clearance Company co-founder Bob Morton, many families trying to independently sell household items online may unknowingly expose senior relatives to financial scams, phishing attacks, and emotional distress.
“What starts as a simple attempt to sell a few items can quickly become risky if families are not aware of how these scams operate,” Morton said.
“We are seeing more scammers specifically targeting senior Australians during downsizing. They know families are often emotionally overwhelmed and vulnerable during these transitions.”
Morton warned that scammers are taking advantage of both the emotional stress involved in downsizing and the limited experience some older Australians may have with online selling platforms.
“This combination can unfortunately make people far more vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated scams,” he said.
How scammers target senior Australians online
Morton said scammers are becoming more convincing and far harder to identify.
“We are seeing fake buyers who appear genuine, offer full price immediately, and create urgency to secure items,” he said.
“They often send fake payment confirmations, phishing links or request refunds for overpayments that never actually existed.”
Other common scam tactics include:
- Requests to move conversations off trusted platforms
- Links designed to steal banking or personal information
- Fake courier arrangements after payments are made
- Long-term trust building before financial exploitation
“In some situations, scammers spend days building rapport before exploiting victims,” Morton said.
He warned that senior Australians are particularly at risk.
“They are often more trusting, less familiar with modern scam tactics and more likely to engage without recognising warning signs,” he said.
Online marketplace scams are becoming more sophisticated
Morton said scammers increasingly use a wide range of digital channels and online marketplaces to target vulnerable users.
“Criminals can use many different online environments, including popular marketplaces, to attempt these scams,” he said.
“While major platforms continue investing in safety features and moderation tools, scammers still find ways to exploit users across multiple online environments.”
The rise in online scams targeting senior Australians mirrors broader trends across the cybersecurity landscape, where cybercriminals increasingly target emotionally vulnerable individuals through social engineering and impersonation attacks.
Why are downsizing families vulnerable to scams?
Morton said engaging professional property clearance specialists can significantly reduce exposure to scams while simplifying the overall process.
“We help reduce scam exposure, remove the need for direct interactions with unknown buyers, and provide a structured end-to-end process,” he said.
“We sort, assess, value, sell, donate, and dispose of items appropriately.”
He said experienced teams also understand market pricing and secure sales processes.
“We understand what items are worth, how they should be sold, and how to achieve the safest possible outcome,” Morton said.
“This approach not only protects families financially, but also reduces stress and preserves dignity during difficult transitions.”
Warning signs families should never ignore
Morton urged Australians to remain cautious when selling items online, especially when senior family members are involved.
“If something feels off, it probably is,” he said.
“Do not click unfamiliar links, avoid unusual payment methods, and never rush into a transaction.”
He warned that the consequences of online scams can be devastating.
“We are seeing families lose money, lose valuable belongings, and in some cases lose trust in the process entirely,” he said.
“The good news is that much of this is avoidable with the right awareness and support.”
