Overseas Staff Selling Business Customer Information Poses Growing Risk
Australian businesses face growing risks from overseas staff selling business customer information. Outsourcing expert and Orbii Global Trust founder Ivan Trajkovski issued the warning. Cyber attacks often dominate security headlines. However, Trajkovski believes many organisations overlook another serious threat. They give offshore workers broad access to sensitive business data without proper due diligence.
Although most outsourcing providers operate professionally and ethically, many businesses fail to assess the governance, security controls and contractual protections surrounding their offshore operations before providing access to valuable information.
“The uncomfortable reality is that many business owners simply don’t know who has access to their information once it leaves Australia,” Trajkovski said.
“They assume it’s secure because they’ve signed a contract, but they often have very little visibility over who is accessing their systems, how teams manage information or what controls exist to prevent misuse.”
Overseas Staff Selling Business Customer Information Can Expose Your Most Valuable Asset
Trajkovski said customer databases have become one of the most valuable assets a business owns.
“Your customer list isn’t just names and phone numbers,” he said.
“It’s years of marketing investment, relationships, buying behaviour, pricing history, commercial intelligence and future revenue.
“If someone gains unauthorised access to that information, the damage can extend well beyond the immediate financial loss. It can impact customer trust, competitive advantage and the long-term value of the business.”
Many businesses protect physical assets first. They often overlook the value of customer data, pricing strategies, supplier agreements, financial records and intellectual property.
Overseas Staff Selling Business Customer Information May Go Undetected
One of the greatest concerns, Trajkovski said, is that businesses may never discover their confidential information has been copied or shared.
“If customer data, pricing information or intellectual property quietly walks out the door, there may be no obvious sign,” he said.
“You may never receive a phone call telling you it’s happened. You may simply find a competitor approaching your customers, undercutting your pricing or releasing remarkably similar products months later.
“Whether that information has been deliberately misused, inadequately protected or accessed without authorisation, the outcome for the business can be the same.”
He warned that many organisations trust outsourcing agreements too easily. They rarely verify who accesses sensitive systems. Many also fail to review how providers monitor that access.
Overseas Staff Selling Business Customer Information Is a Costly Outsourcing Risk
According to Trajkovski, many businesses continue to choose outsourcing providers based primarily on cost rather than security or governance.
“The cheapest provider is rarely the cheapest decision,” he said.
“Business owners will spend months comparing accountants, lawyers or insurance providers, yet many hand over their customer databases after a handful of Zoom meetings and a proposal.
“Outsourcing isn’t simply buying labour anymore. You’re providing access to the engine room of your business.”
He said businesses should treat outsourcing decisions with the same level of scrutiny they apply to other critical commercial relationships.
Stronger Standards Could Reduce the Risk of Overseas Staff Selling Business Customer Information
After more than 20 years working as an outsourcing client, provider, executive and adviser, Trajkovski believes the outsourcing industry has reached a critical point.
“Outsourcing has become essential for thousands of Australian businesses, but trust hasn’t kept pace with growth,” he said.
“There needs to be greater transparency around who businesses are outsourcing to, where work is actually being performed, what security standards exist and how sensitive information is protected.
“The outsourcing industry doesn’t need less outsourcing, it needs better outsourcing.”
He believes greater transparency will help businesses choose providers with confidence. Independent assessments can also reduce commercial risk.
Building Trust Instead of Fear Around Outsourcing
Trajkovski stressed that his objective is not to discourage Australian businesses from outsourcing.
“There are exceptional outsourcing providers around the world delivering extraordinary results every day,” he said.
“My concern isn’t outsourcing itself, it is that businesses are making critical commercial decisions without independent advice, proper due diligence or a clear understanding of the risks.”
Through Orbii Global Trust, Trajkovski is working to improve transparency, accountability and trust across the global outsourcing industry by helping organisations independently compare providers before selecting an outsourcing partner.
“My mission is simple, I want businesses to outsource with confidence, not blind faith,” Trajkovski said.
“Outsourcing will continue to reshape the global economy. The businesses that succeed won’t necessarily be the ones that outsource the most, they will be the ones that know exactly who they’re trusting with their business.”
